Welcome to First Grade

First grade is a year of tremendous growth as students build on the foundations established in kindergarten. They grow as readers, writers and mathematicians while developing independence, curiosity and confidence. With guidance and encouragement, students begin to take greater ownership of their learning and build important skills that will carry them through elementary school.

In English language arts, first graders strengthen their ability to decode words, read with fluency and comprehend increasingly complex texts. They explore fiction and nonfiction, identify story elements and practice retelling key details. Writing expands from simple sentences to complete stories, letters and reports. Students also build vocabulary and grammar skills while learning to express ideas more clearly through speaking and listening.

Math instruction reinforces number sense while introducing new strategies and problem-solving. Students work with numbers up to 120, explore place value and practice addition and subtraction within 20. They also learn about shapes, length, time and data. These skills set the stage for deeper mathematical thinking in the years ahead.

First grade is also a time of exploration in science and social studies. Students learn about weather patterns, the needs of plants and animals, and how scientists observe and record information. They are introduced to concepts of community, rules and responsibilities, as well as holidays and traditions that highlight cultural diversity. Socially, students continue developing friendships, cooperation and self-control, learning how to navigate both classroom and playground experiences with respect and empathy.
