Welcome to Fourth Grade
Fourth grade is a year of growth and discovery as students become more independent learners. They build on the foundations of earlier grades while tackling new challenges that stretch their critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills. With greater confidence, they begin to see how their learning connects across subjects and to the world around them.
In English language arts, students read a wide range of texts, from novels to informational articles, and strengthen their ability to identify themes, analyze characters and compare ideas across works. Writing becomes more sophisticated as students craft multiparagraph essays, research reports and opinion pieces. They refine grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure while continuing to develop clear speaking and listening skills.
Math instruction expands to include multi-digit multiplication and division, equivalent fractions, and operations with decimals. Students explore factors, multiples and patterns, and they apply measurement concepts to area and perimeter. Data analysis and problem-solving continue to emphasize the connection between math and real-life applications.
In science and social studies, students explore topics with greater depth and curiosity. Science may include studies of energy, motion, electricity, ecosystems and Earth’s processes. Social studies often focuses on U.S. history, including early exploration and settlement, as well as geography and government. Throughout the year, students also develop socially and emotionally—learning to collaborate effectively, manage responsibilities and show respect for diverse perspectives. These real-world skills prepare them not only for upper grades but for life.
