Welcome to Kindergarten

Kindergarten is an exciting first step into the world of school. This year lays the foundation for a love of learning as children explore, discover, and grow in a nurturing environment. Students develop early academic skills, build independence, and learn how to be part of a classroom community. Through play, collaboration, and hands-on experiences, they begin a journey that supports both academic and social-emotional growth.

In English language arts, kindergartners develop early reading and writing skills. They learn to recognize letters, sounds, and sight words, and they begin blending sounds to read simple texts. Students practice forming letters, writing their names, and using pictures, words, and sentences to share their ideas. Listening and speaking are also important as students build vocabulary and learn to express themselves clearly with peers and teachers.

Math instruction focuses on building a strong number sense. Students count, compare, and represent numbers up to 20 and beyond. They explore shapes, patterns, and measurement, and they begin solving basic addition and subtraction problems using objects and drawings. These experiences provide a strong foundation for future problem-solving and mathematical thinking.

Kindergarten is also a time of discovery in science and social studies. Through observation and exploration, students learn about weather, plants and animals, and the world around them. They are introduced to concepts of community, rules, and citizenship, as well as traditions and celebrations that help them appreciate the diversity of their surroundings. Just as important, they practice sharing, taking turns, showing kindness, and managing their feelings. These skills help them grow as learners and friends, preparing them for continued success in school and beyond.
