Welcome to Third Grade
Third grade is a milestone year when students begin making the exciting shift from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” With stronger foundational skills in place, they are ready to apply their knowledge to new challenges, explore more complex ideas, and build greater independence in their work. This year sets the stage for deeper thinking, creative problem-solving, and growing confidence both inside and outside the classroom.
In English language arts, students move into longer texts and chapter books, sharpening their fluency and comprehension skills. They analyze themes and main ideas, compare across genres, and communicate their thinking through writing. Third graders learn to organize their ideas into paragraphs, use transition words, and produce stories, reports, and opinion pieces. Vocabulary and grammar instruction continues to expand, and students gain experience speaking and listening in group discussions and presentations.
Math instruction introduces new concepts and applications. Students develop a strong foundation in multiplication and division, work with larger numbers, and get their first look at fractions. They also measure area and perimeter, analyze graphs, and estimate volume and mass. These experiences help students see how math connects to everyday life and prepare them for more advanced problem-solving.
Third grade is also a time of exploration in science and social studies. In science, students study weather and climate, explore ecosystems and adaptations, investigate ancestry and diversity, and practice engineering skills through hands-on challenges. In social studies, they broaden their view of the world by focusing on Missouri, including its history, geography, government and economics. Along the way, they continue to grow socially and emotionally—taking on more responsibility, building friendships, working in teams and practicing empathy and self-control. These skills support both academic success and personal growth.
