Multilingual Learners
At McGrath, we celebrate the diversity of our students and the many languages they bring to our school. We believe every child’s language and culture are strengths that enrich our classrooms and our community.
Our Multilingual Learners (ML) program supports students in developing English proficiency while continuing to grow academically and socially. Instruction is tailored to each student’s needs and may include direct English language development, small-group lessons or in-class support that builds skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
We value and encourage the use of each student’s first language (L1) as a powerful tool for learning and connection. Students are supported in drawing on all their language abilities—sometimes called translanguaging—to express ideas, make meaning and build understanding. Families are also encouraged to continue developing and celebrating their home language, as growing in both languages supports long-term success and a strong sense of identity.
Our multilingual learners team works closely with classroom teachers and families to create supportive learning environments where all students can participate fully and feel a strong sense of belonging. Together, we help students strengthen their language skills, share their voices and thrive as confident learners.
